"Fall Waterlily"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
January 2009
Pamela Turner
Athens, Georgia
Pamela writes, "I have tried to grow this beautiful fall blooming crocus for many years.  I first saw the bulbs several years ago when I was living in a very dry part of Texas.  Assuming they wouldn't fare well in my garden, I bought them and sent them to my mother in Montana where they have doubled in size and are absolutely beautiful!  This year I decided to plant one bulb and see what it produced. This is the result.  Hopefully the bulb will make it through Georgia's drought stricken climate to bloom again next fall."

"Naked Lady"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
February 2009
Sian Kho
Moraga, California
Sian writes, "Amaryllis Bella Dona "Naked Lady" blooms in September. I have this plant for three years (and it) did not bloom; this year the wait was rewarded."

"Petite Petals"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
March 2009
Priscilla George
San Antonio, Texas
Priscilla writes, "My photo of purple candytuft is my favorite photo. It's simple and shows how beautiful a flower that is just starting to bloom can be. The light purple petals seem to glow and really stand out from the background."

"Snowdrops"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
April 2009
Andrew Newton
Kokomo, Indiana
Andrew writes, "I found these guys just casually tucked away in a nook by a neighbor's house."

"Alone"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
May 2009
Kelly Wolkenhauer
Danville, Iowa
Kelly writes, "I love this photo of this lonely rose.  I took the photo in my step-mom's garden.  The roses were all done blooming and this lonely rose was peeking up amongst many other perennials!"

"Louisiana Ginger"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
June 2009
Jacque Caplan
Boyce, Louisiana
Jacque writes, "This "Louisiana" ginger can be almost wild in our area.  Blossoms from summer into the fall, it has such beautiful fragrance and is native...what more could you ask for?"

"Chives in Bloom"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
July 2009
Michele Thompson
Swartz Creek, Michigan
Michele writes, "Chive blossoms were not something I had ever looked at closely before the day I took this picture. I like the fact there is so much detail and beauty to the blossoms I did not realize was there before."

"Gaillardia - What Color!"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
August 2009
Tracy Kessler
Columbus, Ohio
Tracy writes, "I am so astounded by the rich color of the reds and yellows...they look even more vivid in the photo that I feel they do in reality!  They are gaillardias that are in my front yard bed."

"My Daughter's Dahlia"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
September 2009
John Poindexter
Ludington, Michigan
John writes, "This dahlia was planted by my 9 year old daughter Lydia and seems to be so much like her. She is vivid and vibrant while at times tears roll down her face just as these dewdrops sit on the petals."

"Rays of Hope"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
October 2009
Sandra Smith
Shippensburg, Pennsylvania
Sandra writes, "I love the rays of sunshine that illuminate this perennial border first thing in the morning.  The little girl has her umbrella up so the rays don't hurt her eyes as she plays with the bunny.  And of course I love the grape hyacinth and bright red tulips that usher in the gardening season to come!"

"Phlox in Pink"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
November 2009
Rachel Plummer
South Kingstown, Rhode Island
Rachel writes, "What I enjoy most about the above photo is the background in contrast to the subject. The pink phlox, the subject, is in focus and is not a very vivid color, yet in the background you see the faint outline of red leaves. Red is a very vivid color and creates a nice out of focus background."

"Begonia Friend"
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
December 2009
Alice Pelletier
Grover Beach, California
Alice writes, "This little guy has taken up residence on one of my begonia plants.  she\he has been around now for quite some time and I hope she\he stays for a long while!  I love it!"
