Amaryllis &
Paperwhites |
|
When I look at my pots
with flowering Paperwhites, I am wondering how to put into words
the sweet smell of its flowers. Together with Amaryllis,
the Paperwhites
are almost fool proof bulbs that produce spectacular
results. Best of all, they do all of this beautiful
blooming indoors in the dead of winter at a time when
flowers are so welcome to gladden the heart and refresh the
soul.
Plant 3 Paperwhite bulbs in a 4 inch pot or 5 bulbs in a 6
inch pot, water well and keep in a cool place until the bulbs
have made roots. Then, move them to a spot in your home
where you can enjoy their beauty and fragrant scent.
Repeat this process every 2 weeks and you will have Paperwhites
blooming all winter long!
For huge flowers and vivid colors, it is hard to match the
selection of Amaryllis
on the market today. And, for all their exotic tropical splendors,
they are really easy to grow indoors! Actually, Amaryllis
are fun to watch...each day you can see the flower stalk emerge
and the flowers shaping a little more. When choosing these
bulbs, size is everything and bigger really is
better. The larger the bulbs, the more flower stalks are
formed inside and the longer they will bloom.
|
|
|
|
Make sure you only water the Amaryllis with a really good
soaking one time right after planting. After that, water
it very sparingly and only through a saucer. Over watering
will make the roots rot, killing the bulb's system of acquiring
food. Place the pot in a warm place until the buds have
opened. Then, to lengthen the blooming time, place it in a
cool place for everyone to enjoy.
Another spectacular way to enjoy these big blooms is to plant
several together in a larger container...what a magnificent
display this will give you for your holiday gatherings!
These items make WONDERFUL gifts for friends, neighbors or family
members. You can either give them away and have them start
the bulbs themselves or
start growing them and give them once they begin to flower.
However, make sure you do several pots because it will be hard to
part with them all once they start blooming!
To complement these items, we have a selection of beautiful Dutch
Blue Pottery to make an even bolder statement this Holiday
season. And, after the bulbs have flowered, you will have a
unique decorative pot left over!

Touch
of Nature's Gardening
Tip |
|
Make sure you help protect
the bulbs you planted from the frost by putting mulch over those
areas. Don't do this too early in places where
winter doesn't start until January, so that the soil doesn't
become too warm, encouraging them to start growing.
If your tip is being used in our
newsletter, you will receive a $10.00 gift certificate also
redeemable for any items in our catalogs! Email
us your tip today!
