Hello Happy Gardeners,
Welcome the true feeling of Fall...with the time changing this weekend and the leaves turning their beautiful fall colors here in the South and the temperature dropping, I feel an inspiration to get out there and plant my fall bulbs in anticipation of the Spring that will brighten my yard once again.  This issue gives you a head start on the outside garden by giving you some ideas for indoor gardening to get you through the dreaded winter...brighten those cold, wintry  days with a splash of color indoors with these easy to grow indoor forcing bulbs.  Our gardening tip and photo contest are included as well!  Also, don't forget to visit our specials page for some really great deals on Fall bulbs!

**  We would love to hear our reader's thoughts about our newsletter...what you would be interested in reading about and any suggestions you may have for future issues and offers.  Please send your comments to info@touchofnature.com and let us know how we are doing!

Indoor Forcing
Although getting your Fall bulbs planted in the garden in anticipation of a beautiful Spring is a priority, don't forget about the long, dreary winter ahead!  There is still plenty of time to plant some of your favorite bulbs in pots to enjoy indoors all winter long.  Our favorite (and easiest) bulbs to force into bloom indoors include Paperwhites, Amaryllis and Hyacinths.  Together with our Pottery, these not only make great gifts for giving, but also great gifts for keeping!  The sweet fragrance of the Hyacinths and Paperwhites coupled with the magnificence of the Amaryllis flowers will give your Holiday company something to talk about indeed.

Other bulb varieties can also be easily "tricked" into blooming earlier than normal by first giving them an appropriate amount of cooling time (most smaller bulbs require about 15 weeks of chilling time while larger bulbs like Daffodils and Tulips can take from 17 to 20 weeks).  This cooling time should be thought of as 'winter' for the bulbs.  Then, bring the pots into warmer temperatures indoors (or 'spring-time') and the bulbs have been fooled!  They should start to bloom within 2-3 weeks.  By starting some pots every two weeks, you can have spring all winter long indoors!

Our favorite bulbs to try include Narcissus Tete a Tete, Crocus, Chionodoxa, and Muscari.  You can find more detailed instructions on forcing these bulbs here!

Touch of Nature's Gardening Tip

Marnette Byrkit sent us this tip....

When I plant a new rose bush, I add a banana peel to the hole dug for the rose, along with leaf mold and an aged mixture of the following:  green sand, cottonseed meal, and bagged cow manure.  The banana peel gives them a quick shot of potassium.

I hope you like my tip.  My roses sure do.

If your tip is being used in our newsletter, you will receive a $10.00 gift certificate also redeemable for any items in our catalogs!  Email us your tip today!

We have added a number of new items this year including 5 varieties of Alliums, Calla Aethiopica, Fall-flowering Crocus, Cyclamen, Fritillaria, as well as some new Tulips and Daffodils.

Now is the time to start thinking about some of the changes you would like to make...plants you liked; trees and shrubs that have grown too tall and now give too much shade for those sun-loving bulbs & perennials; different color schemes or perennials that have suddenly grown too tall and taken over a portion of your garden.

Work up a plan and get that garden back into shape...ever try to plant 25 of one variety of Tulips in a spot and repeat it several times throughout an area?  You can have larger bare spots in between the plantings and fill those with annuals later in the Spring.  (This makes weeding a lot easier as well!!)

For Fall, all orders over $50.00 receive 10 FREE Yellow Daffodils, and, when you sign our guestbook, you will get a 10% discount on your first online order.  Remember to order early to ensure availability!

If you need or want a copy of our Fall 2002 catalog mailed to you, send us an email at info@touchofnature.com with your address and we will be happy to send it to you!

We hope that some of these items will find a home in your garden, on your patio, on your balcony or in your home.  You can rest assured that your order will have our fullest attention and we know that you will be pleased with the quality results.

Have a Wonderful Day and Happy Gardening!
