Hello Happy Gardeners,
What a busy couple of weeks it has been here getting those Bearded Iris orders out to you, and preparing the space for Fall bulbs to arrive!  We wanted to mention a special on Dutch Iris and, after receiving several requests from you, we have added another level to our great new daffodil mixture - which includes guaranteed 40 different varieties.  We have added a guaranteed 20 different variety mixture and you can read more about that below.  Also, we continue our guidelines series with Late Summer garden tips and announce our September photo contest winner as well!  Thanks again for your continued support and interest in our products and services...we enjoy the feedback we receive from you and hope your experience with us continues to enhance your gardens!

**  We would love to hear our reader's thoughts about our newsletter...what you would be interested in reading about and any suggestions you may have for future issues and offers.  Please send your comments to info@touchofnature.com and let us know how we are doing!

Guidelines for Planting, Preparing & Maintaining Your Gardens This Summer
Below is a LATE SUMMER checklist for your flower gardens and landscape in general...keep in mind that 'LATE SUMMER' is relative to the area in which you live.

Things To Do in Late Summer:

  • Dead head plants in borders, beds and containers
  • Feed plants in containers regularly to keep flowers coming
  • Hoe beds and borders regularly to keep weeds down and to keep them looking neat
  • Take cuttings
  • Clip most evergreens if needed
  • Plant fall-flowering bulbs (crocus, lycoris, etc.)...you can order these online by clicking on their name.
  • Order bulb catalogs or visit on line stores to order for Fall delivery
  • Start planting Fall flowerbulbs where needed especially in areas where Winter comes early.  However, try to wait as long as you can to enjoy the Summer flowers as long as possible.  Keep in mind to plant flower bulbs in circles, squares or triangles and avoid the 'soldiers in a row' theory unless it is in the cutting garden.
  • Prune rose bushes
  • Mow the lawn, except when it is extremely dry
  • Water the lawn in dry spells remembering that a few good soakings serves better in most cases than more frequent light sprinkles.
  • Watch for pests and diseases.  Check for mildew in Dahlias (prevention includes having plenty of room around the plant).
  • Feed and disbud Dahlias.  To get larger flowers from your Dahlias, it is necessary to take both side buds away and leave just the middle one.
