Guidelines for Planting, Preparing
& Maintaining Your Gardens This Summer |
|
Below is a LATE SUMMER checklist for
your flower gardens and landscape in general...keep in
mind that 'LATE SUMMER' is relative to the area in which
you live. Things To Do in Late Summer:
- Dead head plants in borders, beds and containers
- Feed plants in containers regularly to keep flowers coming
- Hoe beds and borders regularly to keep weeds down and to
keep them looking neat
- Take cuttings
- Clip most evergreens if needed
- Plant fall-flowering bulbs (crocus,
lycoris,
etc.)...you can order these online by clicking on their name.
- Order bulb catalogs or visit on line stores to order for
Fall delivery
- Start planting Fall flowerbulbs where needed especially in
areas where Winter comes early. However, try to wait as
long as you can to enjoy the Summer flowers as long as possible.
Keep in mind to plant flower bulbs in circles, squares or
triangles and avoid the 'soldiers in a row' theory unless it is
in the cutting garden.
- Prune rose bushes
- Mow the lawn, except when it is extremely dry
- Water the lawn in dry spells remembering that a few good
soakings serves better in most cases than more frequent light
sprinkles.
- Watch for pests and diseases. Check for mildew in
Dahlias (prevention includes having plenty of room around the
plant).
- Feed and disbud Dahlias. To get larger flowers from
your Dahlias, it is necessary to take both side buds away and
leave just the middle one.
