Guidelines for Planting, Preparing & Maintaining Your Gardens This Summer
Below is a EARLY to MID SUMMER checklist for planning your flower garden and landscape in general...keep in mind that 'EARLY / MID SUMMER' is relative to the area in which you live.

Things To Do in Early to Mid Summer:

  • Dead-head border plants regularly
  • Stake herbaceous plants
  • Sow hardy annuals
  • Plant Dahlias
  • Finish planting summer bulbs
  • Prune early shrubs - Many will do fine without pruning; however, some varieties need pruning after they have flowered.  Check the packaging for recommendations in this area.
  • Sow bi-annuals - These can be sown directly in the garden and need very little attention.  Some varieties will flower the first year, but others may take a year to bloom.  Check the package information so that you will know what to expect.
  • Mow the lawn (except when it is extremely dry)
  • Water the lawn during extreme dry spells (keep in mind that a few good soakings is better than a lot of little sprinklings).
  • Finish hardening off transplants from the greenhouse
  • Watch for pests like aphids - It is very important to check plants for pests and disease as the sooner you treat them, the easier, better and faster the treatment will be.  Be sure to check the labels for safety instructions when using any type of pesticide.
  • Apply appropriate fertilizer on roses after the flush of flowers
  • Hoe beds and borders to keep weeds down - There will almost always be weeds.  To keep them to a minimum, hoe regularly, add mulch as needed and consider a weed-block plastic prior to planting.
  • Divide and replant border Iris - Only divide and replant Iris when they are too crowded after flowering (once every 3-5 years should be sufficient).
  • Clip hedges
