Lawn & Insect
Problems...Use Pesticides Carefully |
|
The use of pesticides can help control many pests, but they have
risks as well as benefits and it is important to use them
properly! Of course, we all know and do the
following:
- Read the entire label on the bottle or package of
pesticides and follow the instructions as they specify.
Too much or not enough of the pesticide will not do the
trick. Also, the weather conditions are important,
since some of the pesticides you need to apply when the
surface is dry and almost always you need to apply it when
there is no wind. Otherwise, it may wind up in places
or on plant material you do not want it to go.
- Wear protective clothing. We don't want
pesticides to get on our skin. Long sleeves and long pants
are a must as well as gloves and a mask. When
finished, always wash these clothes separately from others
before wearing them again.
- Keep bottles and packages of pesticides away from
children and pets. Store them in a place that can
be locked and make sure that children can not get to the
key.
- Make sure that no child or pet will walk over the
treated areas for the amount of time that is prescribed on
the label. That way, the pesticide can not be
tracked to other places, not can it come into contact with
the skin of a child or pet.
- Spot treat where possible. Don't spray an
entire area if that is not necessary.
- Dispose of the leftover or unused portion of the
pesticides according to the directions on the label as
well as according to the State and Local Regulations.
We can then all rest assured that these pesticides do not
wind up in some place where it can harm us, or others, at a
later date.
It is always better to pull a weed, catch a Japanese beetle,
spray off some aphids with the water hose and pick up some
slugs. If, however, you identify a pest that results in
having to use pesticides, use it sparingly and according to the
directions. If you are not sure how and when to use it or
what quantity to use, contact your local County Extension Agent
or a local expert.
