General Note:
If you are disappointed with your perennials in the
beginning of the growing season, don't worry! The first year
is considered a "settling-in" period and not for performance.
Plants change as they grow and characteristics of mature plants
take time to develop. You should give it at least one year
before you pass judgment on a particular plant. |

Daylilies or
Hemerocallis (Click
here to browse over 40 varieties in our catalog) |
|
Each flower of a Daylily opens,
matures and withers in 24 hours or less. Fortunately, many
varieties bloom repeatedly during the season bearing flowers in
shapes including triangular, circular, double, star-shaped and
spider-shaped. They show off best when planted in groups of
3, 5 or more and are excellent for controlling erosion on a bank.
Daylilies are easy to care for and like a good, well-drained
garden soil in full sun as shady conditions will reduce flowering.
They prefer to be watered on a regular basis, not only when they
are flowering but after as well. When the leaves of a
Daylily sprouting from the base turn a dried papery look, it
indicates the soil is too dry.
Some varieties of Daylilies are more prone to fungus than
others and it is best to just go ahead and remove the few affected
leaves when this occurs. (Be sure to not add these to the
compost pile.) If the complete plant looks affected, don't
be afraid to cut the plant back to the ground after flowering.
After a couple of weeks, new growth will emerge.
Daylilies should be divided every 3-5 years either after
flowering or in the Spring when they just emerge. If the
roots are at the surface, it is a good indication that it is time
to divide and replant in order to maintain vigorous plants.
Take some time to
browse
our Daylily selection (over 60 varieties) and reserve your
favorites early as we are already sold out of some varieties.
Remember, your credit card will not be charged until your order
is shipped! |

Touch
of Nature's Gardening
Tip |
|
Once Spring finally arrives in your neck of the woods, it is
time to fertilize your perennials and bulbs. A regular
garden fertilizer will do just fine or you can use special bulb
fertilizers. Either one is better than none at all!
Deadheading is a must with most bulbs as well as with perennials
and annuals. It makes for a nicer, cleaner plant and will
have more nutrients available for the plants and further
flowering. HOW TO CARE FOR AMARYLLIS AFTER FLOWERING?
- During the growing season, it is important to feed the
Amaryllis on a regular basis with a regular houseplant food.
- After the Amaryllis is finished flowering, cut the flower
stalk off just above the nose.
- Keep feeding the Amaryllis while it is still in a warm
place and keep the soil moist by watering it on the saucer.
- You can put the Amaryllis out in the garden, either in the
pot or by taking it out of the pot and planting it.
- Take the Amaryllis back inside in September. Stop
watering and place the bulb in a dry and cool place for 10-12
weeks.
- After this time period, take the bulb out of the pot,
clean off the old foliage and any old roots. Leave the
healthy roots in place.
- Repot in fresh soil, leaving the top 1/3 of the bulb
exposed. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole.
- Place the pot in a warm place and water well initially. Then water sparingly until growth emerges.
Then, water more regularly and keep it in a cooler place.
- Also, resume fertilizing the Amaryllis again.
If your tip is being used in our
newsletter, you will receive a $10.00 gift certificate also
redeemable for any items in our catalogs! Email
us your tip today!
