Tulips are divided in 15 different categories which are mainly defined by their flower characteristics.

Touch of Nature carries over 55 varieties in these categories:

Darwin Hybrid - large blooms and strong stems
Fosteriana - early blooms and large flowers
Fringed - delicately fringed edges and quite tall
Lily-flowering - slender, urn-shaped flowers with pointed tips
Parrot - exotic ruffled petals and color accents
Peony-flowering - elegant, fully double tulips with slightly shorter stems
Single late - tallest garden tulips
Species - unusual shapes and sizes which perennialize well in southern climates
Triumph - best for forcing or in the front border
Viridiflora - striking, green marks on the flowers

Browse through each of these divisions to learn more about what makes each type unique.

Tulips are excellent in beds and in borders.  Many are suitable for forcing and these are marked in the program.  Species Tulips are especially suitable for rock gardens.

Tulips planted in zones 9-10 should be chilled for 8-10 weeks at 40-48 degrees Fahrenheit prior to planting.  You can do this by storing them in a shed, garage or refrigerator if available.  In zones 7-10, Tulips should be planted where they only get the early morning sun.

Varieties that will do very well in the South are Parade, Golden Parade, White Emperor, Renown and Pink Impression.

Planting & Fertilizing
It is extremely important to make sure there is good drainage where you plant your bulbs and that you fertilize the bulbs 3 times with a well-balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer.  Fertilize once when planting, once when they just come above the surface and once right after flowering.
